Parenting Children

The foregoing is an adaptation from: 'Watch Tower Bible & Tract Society'

"Up until your children are 5 years old, they are in cozy family surroundings and it is easier to instill good qualities in them. But once they start school, they are exposed to different ways of doing things and different ways of speaking" - Valter, Italy.

As children grow, they explore the boundaries of thier expanding world. They interact with more people - playmates, schoolmates, and extended family. As Valter, quoted above, notes, you are no longer the sole influence in your child's life, as you were when he was an infant. That is why it is essential that you use these years to teach your child the value of obedience and good manners. It is also important to provide direction with regard to right & wrong.

The skills just described do not come quickly and intuitively. Likely, you will need to reprove, reprimand , exhort, with all long-suffering and art of teaching. Israelite parents were commanded regarding God's laws: "You must inculcate them in your son and speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk on the road and when you lie down and when you get up" (Deuteronomy 6:6, 7). As that scripture indicates, your ongoing instruction is vital.
The responsibility of raising children includes a number of challenges. Let us consider just a few of them.

TIME TO LISTEN

The Bible says that while there is a time to speak, there is also a time to listen. (Ecclesiastes 3:7). How can you teach your child to pay attention when others - including you - are speaking? One way is to set the example. Do you listen attentively to others, including your children?

Children can easily be distracted, and no doubt your patience will be tested as you attempt to communicate with them. Each child is different, so be observant and determine which methods of communication work best with your child. For e.g., David, a father in the UK , says: "I get our daughter to tell me in her own words what I have just said. As a result, she is listening more as she gets older."

When Jesus was instructing His disciples, He told them:"Pay attention to how you listen." (Luke 8:18). If adults need to do that, how much more so do children!

FORGIVE ONE ANOTHER FREELY

The Bible states:"Continue putting up with one another and forgiving one another freely, if anyone has a cause for complaint against another" (Colossians 3:13). Children can be trained to develop the ability to forgive. How?

As discussed above regarding the art of listening, you need to set the example. Let your children see you display a spirit of forgiveness in your dealings with others. Marina, a mother in Russia, makes an effort to do that. "We try to set a good example for our children in forgiving others, making concessions, and not getting offended." She says, adding: "When I am wrong, I apologise to my children. I want them to learn to do the same in their dealings with others."

The ability to resolve differences and forgive will be necessary in adulthood. Train your children now to be considerate of others and to accept responsibility for their own mistakes. By doing so, you will be imparting a valuable gift that will serve them well as they grow.

SHOW YOURSELVES THANKFUL

In these 'critical times hard to deal with', many people are "lovers of themselves." (2 Timothy 3:1, 2) Now, while your children are young, is the time to instill in them a spirit of gratitude. "Show yourselves thankful," wrote the apostle Paul - Colossians 3:15.

Even while they are young, children can learn to show good manners and be thoughtful of others. How? "The best thing you can do to engender a thankful attitude is to demonstrate it tirelessly at home," Dr. Kyle Pruett tells 'Parents Magazine'. He adds: "This means that you are regularly saying how much you appreciate the help you get or other acts of thoughtfulness. It takes lots of practice.

Richard, a father in UK, strives to do that: "My wife and I demonstrate how to thank those who have been kind to us, such as schoolteachers or grandparents," he says. "Whenever we visit a family for a meal, we we write a thank-you card, and all the children sign it or draw a picture on it." Being gracious and thankful will help your child to develop lasting and close relationships in life

DO NO HOLD BACK DISCIPLINE

As your children grow, it is essential for them to learn that actions have consequences. Even at a young age, children are answerable to authority, not only in the home but also at school and in the community. You can help your children learn the principle that you reap what you sow. (Galatians 6:7) How?

The Bible teaches: "Do not hold back discipline" (Proverbs 23:13) If you have made it clear that a certain wrong act will bring a particular consequence, do not be afraid to follow through. "Consistency is vital," says Norma, a mother in Argentina. "Inconsistency encourages a child to manipulate situations according to his liking."

Parents can do much to avoid endless wrangling after a misdemeanor by making sure their children understand the consequences of disobedience beforehand. Children are less likely to resist if they know the rules and what will happen if they break those rules and if they have reason to beleve that the consequences are non-negotiable.

Birth Of Christianity

Christianity began with the birth of a Jewish boy about two thousand years ago. This baby boy was miraculously created by God inside His mother's womb. His name was Jesus. This boy lived for over 30 years. His earthy father was Joseph, a carpenter and His mother Mary was a virgin. Jesus lived at Nazareth in Galilee which was a Jewish colony of the Romans. He was brought up to worship God in the Jewish way. The sacred books used were the ones now called Old Testament.

When Jesus was about 30 years old He began to preach in the synagogue. He could heal sick persons and He performed many miracles. He could also raise the dead to life again. Jesus had a special interest in children as He thought children were an example of how everyone should live.

To assist Him with His activities, He gathered twelve men from different social backgrounds. These men He called His disciples and they would follow and assit Him in His ministry. What He said and did angered many leading Jews. So He was cruelly and shamefully executed. The Jews were angry because to them, He seemed to be claiming He was God or the Son of God. The Roman rulers were irritated by His behaviour as well and feared He was leading a Jewish rebellion against their rule. He was captured after one of His disciples, Judas, had turned traitor. He however, did not fight back. He was beaten and then His execution was carried out by crucifixion. Roman soldiers nailed Him to a cross and let Him hang there until He died.

After Jesus' death and resurrection, His disciples convinced He was alive again, met in Jerusalem about AD 30. There one of them, Peter, addressed a crowd of pilgrims. Peter spoke about the good things Jesus had done through mighty works and wonders by God who had sent Him. He also rebuked the Romans for having killed Him. He assured them that Jesus was alive again and promised that anyone who repented and was baptised would receive the gift of God's spirit. Three thousand people went forward and were baptised.

The early Christian church was born. However, the religion was not always called Christianity. It was once called 'The Way' which was a movement followed by persons who believed in Jesus Christ. It included Jews as well as Gentiles (non-Jews). Today, there are more than over two billion Christians throughout the world. These Christians often differ from each other in some of their practices, beliefs and the ways they behave. They are roughly divided into different categories called denominations.

Causes Of Gas

Some foods are more prone to form gas than others. These include dry beans, corn, apples, raisins, bananas, prune juice, apple juice, milk, onions, celery, carrots, apricots, pretzels, bagels, wheat germ, brussels sprouts, pastries, potatoes, egg-plant, citrus fruits and bread. The reason may be that some of the food escapes digestion and absorption, often because of inadequate cooking or too rapid eating and drinking. The food residues are then made into gas when they reach the colon. Saliva need to be well mixed with all food and drink. Solid food needs to be chewed to a cream before it is swallowed.

Enzyme production by the intestinal tract can be boosted by the eating of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables, seeds and nuts. Chew them well.

The major gases of the intestinal tract, oxygen, hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane are odourless. These components of intestinal gas which have a bad odour, much less than 1%, include ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, volatile amino acids, short-chain fatty acids and highly disagreeable amines such as indole and skatole. Fats and proteins have the unpleasant smelling residues whereas carbohydrates tend to have the odourless components of intestinal gas. Acids are often produced when intestinal gas is formed, causing irritation and discomfort in the colon.

The following are some additional causes of gas in the colon:

Overtaxing the digestive system.
·         Eating too fast or too slowly.
A desirable mealtime might be 30 -45 minutes

·         Inadequate chewing
Chunks of food escape which cannot be completely digested. Chewing with the mouth open encourages swallowing f air

·         Eating too much
The digestive tract is unable to handle the excess food.

·         Meals too close together or off schedule

Drinking with meals, or too much of liquid food, milk, soups, and juices

Tension, noise, or distraction at mealtime

Improper cooking.  Grains and legumes may require several hours

Wrong combination – fruits and vegetables, milk, eggs, and sugar

Inadequate amount of water between meals

Eating foods that disagree with one. Milk sensitivity is a frequent cause of gas. An intolerance to lactose, the chief carbohydrate of dairy products, is the most common food sensitivity

Reclining after meals

Those Who Lose Weight, Win

Experience teaches us, and statistics affirm, that rarely will we find an obese vegetarian. In fact, obesity or the tendency towards it is one of the good reasons to change diet and base it on plant foods.

Overweight creates many health problems. The heart, the bones and joints are overloaded in performing their functions. Weight loss is to achieve good health. It has been said that one kilo more of weight shortens life by one year.

The ideal weight of an adult can be approx calculated by taking into consideration the height: the number of centimetres which exceed one metre are  the kilos that an individual should weigh. Normal weight is that between 10% above or below this number of kilos. Thus a person who measures 1.70 metres should weight 70 kilos, with a normal margin of between 63 and 77 kilos, depending on the bone structure.

Obesity or overweight is the result of an imbalance between energy that is ingested and that which the body really needs. The energy that is left over accumulates in the form of fats, especially under the skin.

Seen in this way, there are only two solutions to avoid excess weight: take in less calories and use more calories. Nevertheless, this is not as simple as it seems, and there are other factors which decisively affect the problem of overweight

CAUSES OF OVERWEIGHT
Have you not heard this saying at some time?
"I do not understand why I am putting on weight, with the little that I eat!'
Very often over weight persons are accused of eating too much. But really, this is not the only nor most important cause of overweight. All of us have known thin persons who eat constantly. There are even those who try to gain weight, but it does not happen. Therefore, aside from eating too much food, there must be other factors which cause overweight.  A classic experiment which investigators of human nutrition know well is: Eating exactly the same, and carrying on the same daily exercise programme causes some persons to increase in weight, others maintain weight, and still others may even become thinner. Not all persons gain weight at the same rate. The causes of the differences between individuals are not clear as  yet  despite the great amount of research undertaken on this subject.
The following are some indications:

Hereditary factor. There are persons who have inherited from their ancestors a corpulent constitution, which may possibly be related to better assimilation of food.
Individual factors. These depend on the hormonal balance of each person. Hormones such as thyroxine, produced by the thyroid gland, speeds the combustion of nutrients in the body.On the contrary, insulin increases the lipogenesis (production of fats). It has been proven that overweight persons are less sensitive to insulin, that is, they need more insulin to metabolise glucose. As a result, this causes an increase in the production of fat.
Smaller thermogenic capacity. That is, overweight persons produce less heat than thin people. The calories that are not transformed into energy accumulate in the body in the form of fat. On the contrary, thin persons spend more calories in trying  to keep the body warm so they consume more energy and have a small deposit of fat.
More sensitive hunger centre. A nerve nucleus which regulates the appetite and which is found in the hypothalamus, in the centre of the brain. This makes individuals who tend to be overweight get hungry more often, and need more food to enjoy the feeling of fullness.

Inspirational Insights: Christianity

Inspirational Insights: Christianity: "Many of my friends on the social media are Christians. I would just like to affirm the faith we share and for those who are not, I hope this..."

Christianity

Many of my friends on the social media are Christians. I would just like to affirm the faith we share and for those who are not, I hope this might bring some inspiration.

The God we serve is real. He is as real as you and I except that He is a Spirit and I use 'He' only for convenience since God is sexless, meaning neither male nor female. I have a Close relationship with Him. I speak to Him as I speak to my friends. He listens even when I don't think He is listening. He acts, sometimes slowly but always acts. If he does not act, it means that He is not in agreement with the request(s) being made.

In the church, there are many persons who have various positions and attend services very regular but have no personal relationship with God. They pray to Him but do not know Him. Now this is terrible because He should be the reason why we attend church in the first place. We should not join a church because we want to be a part of a group or a member of a group or because it is politically correct to do so. We must put God first in all things.

I can testify to the wonderful things that I have experienced, through Christ, since becoming a Christian. It is truly awesome and I am not for one minute saying that it was an easy road!

Do You Believe Christianity is loosing Appeal?

The Days of SummerChristianity as a religion, should be doing much more and offering much hope for its adherents. Given recent events in the world and more especially on a regional basis, one has to wonder where is God in all of these things that are happening. True, it is foretold that these things will happen as a fulfilment of scriptural prophecies but then on the other hand those of us who are called to missionary work- and to spread the gospel of Jesus' dying for sinners- across the globe, how effective are we doing this? In other words is the message being communicated effectively that makes sense to unbelievers? The Muslim religion seems to be growing at an alarming rate in tandem with the unorthodox and unscriptural methods of wayward Muslims.
why should one change from this religion or even Sikhism to Christianity? Are we just presenting the word clouded with srciptural passgaes that we ourselves migh even be misinterpreting and therefore confusing the would-be believer rather than enlightening him? I do believe that the time has come for us to take another look at how we are carrying out this mandate.

We should first demonstrate a level of understanding of the Christian principles and scriptures, put them in our own words and use them as our own. Then and only then can we demonstrate understanding. Speak to persons from the heart and belief and let them come to see how their lives will be different if they were to accept the Christian faith. Follow-up as often as is necssary and never stop praying for the person but with the person. Never quote scriptures to the would-be convert. When you have succeeded through prayer and follow-up in conversion then this would be the time to take the person through the scriptures so that he can understand them by and for himself. This is very important.
